Biometrics, where an individual's identity is verified by a unique physical or behavioural characteristic, is fast becoming a standard solution for a variety of applications, including physical access control, computer welfare payments and healthcare data security.

While it traditionally has been only used in high security applications, it is now gaining acceptance in mainstream consumer applications world-wide.

As systems have been automated, security measures have been put into place, usually in the form of a PIN ( Personal Identification Number ) or plastic card. The PIN is the least secure of three levels of security. It is something that you know.
